AYRS Zoom meeting
For this meeting Paul Constantine will tell us about the swing rig on his self- designed and self-built cruising trimaran. A swing rig, also sometimes referred to as a balestron rig, or an Aerorig, is a sail plan that has the mainsail boom extended forward of the mast so that the foresail tack can be attached to the forward extremity of this boom. This is generally achieved by having the boom as a wide enough structure so that the mast can pass up through it. As the mainsail is sheeted in and out, the foresail and mainsail rotate together about the mast. The picture below shows the swing rig on Paul’s trimaran.

Paul is an experienced home boat-builder. Previous to the trimaran covered in this talk Paul built a Kelsall-design 35 foot trimaran and he has helped with design and construction of various friends’ projects. Paul and his wife Alison have sailed a variety of craft over the years, as well as the two trimarans he built. They have dinghy cruised in a 13foot Torch dinghy that Paul fitted with an ingenious camping cover for overnight accommodation. Having recently sold the second trimaran, they will now be cruising in a 23foot monohull lift-keel yacht.
Paul was the Cruising Secretary and National Secretary of MOCRA and editor of Multihull Magazines which covered the development of modern multihulls, so he has a wide knowledge of the work of all the pioneer designers, builders and sailors in this field. He has also written books about multihull Round Britain, cruising and also dinghy cruising. He may still be able to offer some of these, if you contact him at moonshine.pub@hotmail.co.uk
