Hello, my name is Allen from New Orleans, LA, USA. I have been studying the single outrigger sailing canoes of Polynesia, Austronesian, and the eastern coast of Africa. What I would like to endeavor is a sail around the island of Zanzibar in their traditional single outrigger, the ngalwa. What I am having a hard time finding the a vessel to use. Any leads/experience/advice? Naturally I have contacted local yacht clubs and port officials but to little avail.

Things may have changed since I was down on the coast (well, it was 50 years ago!), but memory says they were double outriggers, and memory also says there was no organisation as such that allowed you to book one, you had to negotiate with a fisherman to take you out (and there were a number of them who would hang round the hotels on the off-chance of business)
NB Unless things have changed you were expected to bargain over the price!

Good luck
Simon

PS Have changed the title to read "Tanzania" as that's where Zanzibar is.
