SUMMARY:AYRS Annual General Meeting (on Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:AYRS Meeting Host is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. \nThis year\, because of COVID\, AYRS is taking its AGM online. The timing\, somewhat later than usual\, is so that members in America and Australasia may participate without too much discomfort.\nAgenda\, Committee report and other papers will be posted in the AYRS Forum https://www.ayrs.org/forum.\nNote: AYRS desperately needs new Committee members\, especially those with computer skills\, to fulfil the roles of Secretary\, and Treasurer/Membership Secretary! The work of each will be documented and published on the AYRS website\, https://www.ayrs.org/about-ayrs/legal/\nVolunteers please contact: AYRS Secretary; email: secretary@ayrs.org before 25th December; as should anyone wishing to raise any other business not on the Agenda. NB: General discussion points will be taken on 9th January. \nRegistration from 19:15 for the meeting to run from 19:30–21:00 GMT. The meeting is open but only paid-up members of AYRS are entitled to vote. \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://zoom.us/j/2536740617?pwd=VFdMOGxWRDNzK1Z4NkxpTkU1a3ZUZz09 \nMeeting ID: 253 674 0617\nPasscode: ayrs \nOne tap mobile\n+13017158592\,\,2536740617# US (Germantown)\n+13126266799\,\,2536740617# US (Chicago) \nDial by your location\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\nMeeting ID: 253 674 0617\nFind your local number: https://zoom.us/u/adUa0P78R0

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - AYRS South-East UK meeting
DESCRIPTION:This face-to-face event is now cancelled due to COVID restrictions. \n  \n  \n  \nWriting this update at the end of the September it seems quite likely that we will have to cancel this meeting and also revise our arrangements for our AGM which we had planed to follow on from this meeting. \nHowever\, if the virus situation does improve by the end of 2019 allowing us to follow our original plan then this meeting will be held at a new venue – the meeting room of the Basingstoke Canal Centre which is near Farnborough in Surrey – note that it is not actually at Basingstoke! \nSo\, if we can follow the original plan we will have a morning and afternoon of chat and presentations about members’ projects and new developments in sailing\, followed by the AGM of the society which will be separately announced. \nAlthough this event covers several hours you can arrive and leave as you wish. Bring your pictures/video/posters/hardware to show other members. If you have a more formal presentation you could let the organiser know in advance to be sure we can fit you in\, but that is not essential. \nTea & coffee available through the day and there is an on site cafe for lunch so it is not essential to bring a packed lunch.   If you arrive before 10:00am you should be able to enjoy a tea or coffee\, or even breakfast\, in the on-site café. \nAs with other AYRS events\, this meeting is open to all who are interested in sailing technology so do invite friends along. \nDonations invited to pay for the hall. \n

SUMMARY:AYRS Zoom Meeting - Christmas Party
DESCRIPTION:At our November Zoom meeting I asked for a show of hands for a Zoom ‘Christmas Party’ and a handful of people were interested so I have scheduled an extra informal meeting for Saturday 5th December. It can hardly be a traditional Christmas Party\, although I will not mind if people turn up with fancy hats and tell us funny stories or interesting things that happened to them during our abbreviated sailing season. We might also use this meeting to try out the Zoom ‘Breakout Room’ feature. This allows the meeting to divide into smaller groups\, say four people to a group\, for a set period of time\, say ten minutes\, then re-convene. This is a way for people to get to know each other and I have seen it work well with Zoom meetings of another organisation. \nLink to join Zoom Meeting:\nhttps://zoom.us/j/2536740617 \nMeeting ID: 253 674 0617\nOne tap mobile\n+13017158592\,\,2536740617# US (Germantown)\n+13126266799\,\,2536740617# US (Chicago) \nDial by your location\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\nMeeting ID: 253 674 0617\nFind your local number: https://zoom.us/u/adUa0P78R0

SUMMARY:Zoom Meeting - Skip Johnson presents his latest proa project
DESCRIPTION:As part of our August Zoom meeting Skip Johnson gave us a short summary of his proa building and sailing over the years.  For our October meeting Skip will go into more detail on his latest proa\, boat name ‘Trivial Obsession”- photo below.  This boat is now built\, just waiting for the Labor day holiday to end so traffic and boating chaos eases for the new boat to be launched and start trials.  By the time of our October meeting Skip may well have some on-water experience with the new boat. \nNote for those overseas from the UK – the times announced for AYRS Zoom meetings are British Standard Time (BST).

SUMMARY:Zoom meeting - tell us about your 'lockdown' projects and recent boating activity
DESCRIPTION:We are now holding our on-line meetings on a monthly rather than weekly basis.  All but one of our on-line meetings to date have followed the format of a presentation followed by questions from the audience.  We plan to continue this format as and when we have speakers offering to give presentations but we may not be able to have speakers for every meeting so this month’s meeting will be an experiment with a more open meeting format.  I expect many of our members will have been using the lockdown period to make progress on boat related projects and now that the restrictions are being eased in many countries quite a few members will have been afloat so this meeting is an opportunity to tell us about your boat projects/yacht research/sailing.   So if you have a few pictures you can show the meeting do bring them to the meeting – well perhaps that should read more like ‘have them available so that you show them using the Zoom ‘share screen’ facility’.

SUMMARY:RINA Webinar - INEOS TEAM UK: Developing the ultimate racing monohull for the 36th America's Cup
DESCRIPTION:Led by Sir Ben Ainslie\, a previous America’s Cup winner and the most successful Olympic sailor of all time\, INEOS TEAM UK was formed in 2018 to bring the America’s Cup home to Britain. We are delighted to welcome Nick Holroyd\, Chief Designer at INEOS TEAM UK as our guest speaker for this webinar. \nThe America’s Cup is the oldest international sports trophy in the world and the most expensive to win. It is a competing platform where the most advanced marine technologies\, strategic decision-making\, and sailing skills all meet in the dramatic performance of racing flying yachts. The AC75 Class Rule\, which defines the parameters within which teams can design an eligible yacht to compete in the next Cup\, has introduced some ground-breaking regulations. Not only has the type of craft changed dramatically\, from multihull catamaran to fixed-configuration monohull\, but new limitations on prototyping and physical testing were introduced that compel teams to fully rely on a digital twin to develop their boat. \nRegister now to learn how and why digitalization has become paramount in the race to develop the next winning America’s Cup yacht.

SUMMARY:Zoom Meeting - From the West Indies to New Zealand - Bernard Rhodes
DESCRIPTION:At our previous meeting\, Bernard Rhodes gave us a fascinating talk about how back in the 1960’s he designed and built a small plywood trimaran to travel the world and to escape from what he found to be a dull job working as an apprentice in the shipyard at Barrow-in-Furness. Bernard’s previous presentation covered his preparations for voyaging and his travels from Cumbria UK to the West Indies including storms and calms\, boat repairs and parties with other world voyagers and also a period during which he worked with Dick Newick completing the famous racing proa ‘Cheers’. Next week Bernard will continue with his voyage on to New Zealand where he settled on Waiheke Island\, the place where still lives today. So all welcome to join us on Zoom on Saturday 13 June at 19:30 British Summer Time (which will be Sunday morning for Bernard in New Zealand). The link to join the meeting is:\nhttps://plymouth.zoom.us/j/9161080000 \nFor those who are not familiar with Zoom\, it is a video conferencing system that has gained popularity in recent months. To join the meeting simply click the link above a few minutes befor the meeting start time and if you have the Zoom software installed on your computer or other internet access device you should then be directed to the meeting. You can get the (free) software at www.zoom.us/download. The software you need for a Windows or Apple computer is the top button in the list\, it is labelled ‘Zoom Client for Meetings’. There is also Zoom software available for Apple\, Andriod and Linux. Plenty of further information about Zoom is available from the internet.

SUMMARY:Zoom Mtg. No. 8 - Design and Construction of a 21 foot Trimaran - Bernard Rhodes
DESCRIPTION:Bernard Rhodes from New Zealand will give the first part of a presentation about a 21 foot trimaran and the remarkable voyage he made with this boat from the UK to New Zealand back in the ’70s. I think this first part will cover just the design and construction of the boat pictured above. \nSee https://plymouth.zoom.us/rec/play/6MJ5cLitrjw3G4aRsQSDCvd7W464J62shyAfrPINmEnkU3IGNFahZrBDZeFbQ3hvTfobkDRBdPaUQ7Oo?continueMode=true&_x_zm_rtaid=8bGOd0DJSX29hxkw6SJ8dw.1592075236094.257664df8a574a5f1dbb4cb75f7bb1dc&_x_zm_rhtaid=278

SUMMARY:Zoom Mtg. No. 7 - Experiences with Anti-Fouling Treatments
DESCRIPTION:This meeting will provide an opportunity to exchange experiences with antifouling paints and possibly other ways to inhibit underwater fouling. At a recent Zoom meeting several of those present indicated that they would be happy to contribute to this so if you can tell us about your experience\, good\, bad or indifferent\, with a particular antifouling treatment in a particular geographical area please do tell us about it.\nAs an introduction to this meeting\, there appear to be five main types of antifouling treatment as follows: \n\nSoft Antifouling paint\, also known as eroding or ablative – the whole thickness of a biocide impregnated paint coating slowly erodes. This reduces the need to remove old paint before applying new. This is the most widely used kind of antifouling paint today.\nHard Antifouling paint – biocides dissolve out of a paint base which does not itself erode to any great extent. Requires removal of old coatings before re-coating. Can be sanded/polished to gives a smoother lower drag surface than most soft antifouling paints although ‘self polishing’ soft paints are intended to combine low drag with reduced need for coating removal.\nPaints relying on non-stick properties rather than biocides\, generally silicone based. ‘Aquacote’ and Hempel ‘Silic-one’ are examples. Slime forms on the hull but is relatively easily cleaned\, possibly while the vessel is afloat\, or it is removed by sailing at speeds over 8 knots. A fairly recent development which is not yet widely used.\nCoatings\, generally epoxy\, in which are encapsulated particles of pure copper. Occasional light sanding exposes fresh copper. I think copper ’tiles’ for bonding to a hull have also been available. Also\, at least one yacht has been built from copper-nickel alloy which has inherent anti-foulding properties.\nMethods that do not use any coating on the hull – ultrasound\, electrolysis or a giant bag enclosing the hull of a moored boat with treated water within the bag.\n\nIt would be good to hear of peoples experiences with the various options\, particularly those options which may become the only options if copper based anit-fouling paints are banned.

SUMMARY:Zoom Mtg. No. 6 – Power from Natural Fluid Flow
DESCRIPTION:For this meeting AYRS member Tom Potts would like to tell us about an idea for generating power from natural fluid flows which could be the wind or water currents or possibly even wave action. He would like us to discuss this and add our own thoughts to see what we come up with. I am hoping that he might also tell us a bit about Cornish gig rowing. \nAt our last Zoom meeting I sugested a change to the day of the week for these meetings since in the UK at least\, limited outdoor recreation is now permitted\, so on Saturday evenings some of us may be returning from a day out boating.  However\, after a short discussion the consensus at our last meeting was to stay with Saturday meetings for the time being\, so our next meeting will be next Saturday evening. \nComing up soon we plan to have a Zoom meeting about anti-fouling treatments and a meeting at which Bernard Rhodes from New Zealand will tell us about the design and construction of the 21 foot trimaran which he sailed across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans back in the ’70s. \nOur announcements are now being sent out to AYRS members through a Mailman list (https://list.org/).  The way that we first had this set up meant that replies from individual members were being circulated to the whole membership which resulted in members receiving unwanted messages\, so apologies for that.  I hope this has now been corrected – I am sure it will very quickly become obvious if it has not.

SUMMARY:Zoom Meeting No 4 – The 'Paradox' - a 14 foot cruising boat
DESCRIPTION:Paradox miniature cruising yacht (in Salcombe harbour)\nAlastair Law will tell us about building and sailing his 14 foot (4.27m) sailing boat\, an example of the Paradox design by Matt Layden. (www.microcruising). \nAlastair’s boat\, ‘Little Jim’ was the first Paradox to be built in the UK. Alastair has sailed it extensively on the south and south west coasts of the UK and finds it ideal for his purposes. \nThe Paradox design is: \n\nSeaworthy for estuary and coastal cruising.\nBetter able to protect its crew from adverse weather than most boats of this size – can be sailed entirely from ‘down below’.\nRobustly constructed – strengthened underneath to take the ground.\nAble to carry a lot of provisions and equipment – Alastair caries an inflatable tender and a folding bicycle on his one.\nComfortable for a solo sailor to spend time on board\, including overnight.\nReasonably easy for transport by road trailer.\nFaster to windward than many people would imagine that it could be.\n\nBut its not a boat for family sailing! \nSee under ‘website’ below for the link to join this meeting (actually the same link as for our previous Zoom meetings)  No password required to join the meeting\, just click on the link a little before (say a few minutes before)  the meeting start time or if you need the meeting reference number it is the 10 digit number at the end of the link.

SUMMARY:Zoom Meeting No 3 - Building a sliding seat rowing boat
DESCRIPTION:At our previous Zoom meeting John Perry covered the design for a sliding seat rowing boat and showed video demonstrating the design features.  For this follow on meeting John will describe the construction of the boat and include a few pictures of the boat in use.  This will be a slightly shorter presentation than last time\, so there should be good opportunity for questions and discussion. \nNote that the time of this meeting is later in the day than the previous meeting – this may make it easier for members on the far side of the planet.  (the time given for the meeting is British Summer Time) \nFor the link to join the meeting see ‘event website’ below.  (the link is the same as for our previous Zoom meetings)

SUMMARY:Zoom meeting - Design & Construction of a Sliding Seat Rowboat
DESCRIPTION:Design and Construction of a Sliding Seat Rowing Boat \n– presentation by John Perry followed by questions/discussion \nThis rowing boat was first launched May 2017 and since then has had frequent use on the estuaries of Devon and Cornwall and also camping trips on rivers in the UK and France.  These are some of the features: \n\nDesigned for a single rower with or without a passenger\, this required two rowing positions to maintain longitudinal balance.\nFolding outriggers allow coming alongside quays and lock walls.\nStorage space for camping equipment.\nDetachable wheels for launch/recovery and for portaging.\nArrangements for easy loading onto car roof rack.\n3mm plywood construction with external glass epoxy sheathing\n\nFor those who are not familiar with Zoom: \nTo join the meeting wait until a few minutes before the start time then click the link provided in this meeting announcement (under ‘Website’\, below). If you already have Zoom software installed on your computer or other internet device then your email client should then direct you to Zoom when you click this link and you can then join the meeting. If you click the above link but you don’t have the Zoom software installed then I think you will be prompted to download and install the software before you can join the meeting so it is probably best to already have the software installed before you try to join Zoom meetings. You can get the free Zoom software at www.zoom.us/download – the software you need  for a Windows or Apple computer is the top button in the list\, it is labelled ‘Zoom Client for Meetings’.  If you want to use Zoom on a smartphone there are Zoom apps available for Apple and Android.    Zoom can be used with almost any device capable of accessing the internet but it probably does work best on a computer since a larger screen will give you a view of everyone present. \nBeing in a Zoom meeting you can almost forget that you are not in the same room as the othe participants.  You see the other participants and can talk to them.  The ‘mute’ facility is quite important\, when you are not speaking to the meeting is a good idea to mute yourself so that background noise from your environment is not transmitted to the meeting but remember to unmute yourself if it is you who are speaking to the meeting!  When a presentation is being given the host may mute everyone except the person giving a presentation. \nWe are grateful to one of our members for hosting our Zoom meetings on a commercial account\, this means that we do not have the time limit that applies to free accounts.

SUMMARY:AYRS Zoom meeting
DESCRIPTION:Last weekend we held a first trial Zoom meeting for AYRS members in the south west of the UK.  For this locally based meeting we had no prepared agenda\, we just introduced ourselves and chatted about our boating interests  This went well\, so our next meeting is open to all and this time we will try having a more formal agenda – \nSo: \nAt 16:00 (London time) next Saturday AYRS member Kim Fisher will present the ‘Rescue Float’ project that he is carrying out in collaboration with AYRS member Chris Watson.   \nBriefly\, this is a project to develop a craft for use by beach lifeguards. Some beach lifeguards today are using surf boards\, others have RIBs or jet skis. The Rescue Float is intended to fit somewhere between these options – it is more suitable for carrying a casualty and possibly administering first aid than is a surf board but it is cheaper and easier to launch than a powered craft. The AYRS had a fine looking stand at the recent RYA dinghy exhibition and the ‘Rescue Float’ was the centre piece for the stand and attracted plenty of interest. \nQuestions can follow Kim’s presentation and we may also have some discussion about the way forward for any future Zoom meetings. \nThe link to join this meeting is below\, under Website.  If you need the meeting reference number it is the ten digit number in that link. \nFor those not familiar with Zoom: \nZoom is a video conferencing system that has been recommended to us by an AYRS member who works at the University of Plymouth – he has been using it regularly during the pandemic to give lectures to groups of up to about 70 students. \nIf you already have Zoom software installed on your computer or other internet device then your email client should direct you to Zoom when you click the link for the meeting\, allowing you to join the meeting which you should do a little before the published start time. If you try to join too early you may be asked to wait\, and you may be able to chat to others who are waiting for the meeting to start.  If you click the link but you don’t have the Zoom software installed then I think you will be prompted to download and install the software before you can join the meeting. Hence it is probably best to already have the software installed before you try to join Zoom meetings. \nYou can get the (free) software at www.zoom.us/download. The software you need for a Windows or Apple computer is the top button in the list\, it is labelled ‘Zoom Client for Meetings’. If you want to use Zoom on a smartphone there are Zoom apps available for Apple and Android. Zoom can be used with almost any device capable of accessing the internet but it probably does work best on a computer since a larger screen will give you a view of everyone present. \nIf you are listening to a presentation in a Zoom meeting it is probably best to ‘mute’ yourself so that any background noise in your surroundings is not conveyed to the meeting. However\, you need to remember to ‘unmute’ yourself if it becomes your turn to speak!

SUMMARY:Postponed - South West UK Local Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Clearly we have to postphone this meeting in line with current (20 March) government guidance on ‘Social Distancing’.   We look forward to a time when we are in a position to announce a revised date. \nIn the meantime\, I am considering the possiblity of a virtual meeting over the internet\, let me know if you would be interested or if you have suggestions for how this could be set up and run.  – John Perry \n———————————————————————————————- \nImportant note: Public parking within the tiny hamlet of Forder is almost non-existent. To avoid taking up the few parking spaces that are needed by residents we recommend parking near St Stephen’s church or the Cecil Arms pub in Saltash (which is where we plan to gather later for supper) and then walk down the hill to Forder. Access to the Community Hall is on foot via a private lane down the west side of Forder Creek. For bringing heavy items to the Community Hall it is permissible to drive down this lane\, there is space for a single vehicle to unload at the hall. \nForder is about a mile and a half south west from the centre of Saltash\, just across the Tamar into Cornwall. Access from other parts of south west UK is likely to be via the A38 trunk road. \nAYRS meetings are open to all\, so do invite friends who may be interested. \nWe have the use of the hall from 12:30 through to 18:00. Outline program as follows\, but don’t feel that you necessarily have to stay with us for the whole period. Attend for any part of the program or all of it. \n13:00 Gather at the hall for sandwich lunch – bring your own sandwiches or whatever\, we will provide tea\, coffee etc. \n14:00 We may take a short stroll in the vicinity of Forder – the hall is right on the waterside and there are nice footpaths through the local nature reserve and along the Lynher estuary. We will only include this activity if it is what those present would like to do at the time – the weather may influence this. \n15:30 Light refreshments followed by chat about boating and/or more formal presentations – let me know if you would like to contribute – sailing holiday snaps\, boat building / maintenance as well as actual yacht research are all good topics. We will have means to display digital photographs/video by USB but I don’t think the hall has WiFi. We would also like to include some discussion of future AYRS meetings in the West Country – if there is interest from local boat owning members we may be able to arrange an on-the-water gathering in the summer. \n17:30 to 18:00 Move up the hill to the Cecil Arms pub for supper – let me know if you would like to join us for supper so that I can book a table for 18:30. \nWe will share the cost of the hall/tea/coffee but will limit this to maximum £5:00 per head. \nFor further information contact John Perry – 07484 668904 (M) 01752 863730 (L)
