SUMMARY:Gathering at Mount Batten near Plymouth
DESCRIPTION:Come by boat or by land\, for one or both days.  Show your projects and chat about sailing.  Join other members for a meal in the Mount Batten Centre bar at around 7pm on Saturday evening. (Let Jasper know if you would like to be i ncluded in a table booking).  Make informal arrangements to sail in company or crew with other members on the Sunday. \nContact for this meeting is Jasper Graham-Jones\, Mobile 07881085435\,  Jasper.graham-jones@plymouth.ac.uk \nThe venue is Mount Batten Watersports & Activities Centre\, 70 Lawrence Rd\, Mount Batten\, Plymouth PL9 9SJ\,   https://www.mount-batten-centre.com/    Telephone 01752 40456\,   enquiries@mount-batten-centre.com \nCar parking in the Mountbatten Centre is £5.00 per day and can be booked at the centre reception on arrival or anytime before.  There is also a free public car park across the road from the centre.  There is a wide concrete free public slipway at Mount Batten which is suitable for launching all sizes of road trailable boats at almost all tide states – it is only at low water springs that the concrete tails off into a stony seabed at the end of the slipway.  If you need overnight accommodation the Mount Batten Centre does offer some rooms\, there is also Hotel Mount Batten nearby and other hotels and B&Bs in the area. \nSaturday – Given suitable weather\, Jasper plans to sail from Looe\, Cornwall\, in his Swift 18 sailing boat and arrive at Mountbatten to meet up with other members on the foreshore between the pontoon and the public slipway at about 4pm on Saturday 7th May.  John and Josephine plan to arrive about mid-day with their sailing dinghy.  Jasper plans to either stay overnight on the beach at Mount Batten or to take a berth in the Plymouth Yacht Haven Marina which is a short walk east from the Mount Batten Centre. The marina has a minimum charge of 7 meters and £29 per night.    If there is poor weather Jasper will drive from Looe bringing a small boat\, probably a kayak.  If the weather is very poor we will meet in the bar of the Mount Batten Centre at about 5pm rather than outside on the foreshore. \nSunday – Meet for coffee/breakfast for people who stay overnight.  It would be ideal if we could sail in company.  Also a good opportunity to get photos taken at sea. \nIf you wish to join\, or have any questions please contact Jasper\, Email is best. It is not essential to contact Jasper in advance but it would be helpful if you can do so since Jasper would like to have some idea of how many people are coming and what kind of boats they may bring. \n\n\n\nSaturday 7th May \nHigh Water 10:03     4.24m \nLow water 16;09      2.10m \nHigh Water 22:15    4.63m\nSunday 8th May \nLow water  04:39      2.15 m \nHigh Water  10:51    4.24m \nLow Water 16:57    2.35m \nHigh Water 23:10   4.43m \n \n\n\n\n \nPictures above show the Mount Batten slipway towards low tide.  It’s a 15m wide gently sloping concrete slipway\, it was used for launching Sunderland seaplanes.  The beach to the side of the slipway is stony with some larger boulders.  In the first picture you can see the Plymouth Yacht Haven marina in the distance behind the slipway.  The marina is about 400m from the slipway\, a few minutes walk east along the sea front. \n

SUMMARY:March Zoom Meeting
DESCRIPTION:For our March meeting I propose to talk about the instrumented hydrofoil that I have made for our display at the RYA Dinghy Show at the end of February.  For our Zoom meeting I can explain how it works and how easy it is these days for a non-electronics specialist such as myself to put together a data logging system to take experimental measurements and record data electronically.  I can also describe the various experiments I have in mind for this equipment\, or maybe improved versions of this equipment – these include: \n\nInvestigating some possible ways to control the flying height of  a Tee style hydrofoil\, perhaps even without needing any electronics or powered actuators or even ‘wands’.\nQuantifying stuctural stress in hydrofoils\ncomparing various styles of hydrofoil – e.g. ]T’ shape\, ‘V’ shape\, ‘L” shape ‘J’ shape etc.\nQuantifying the hydrodynamic advantage that an underhull rudder may have over a transom mounted rudder.\n\nThe link to join this meeting is: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/2536740617?pwd=VFdMOGxWRDNzK1Z4NkxpTkU1a3ZUZz09. \nThe meeting ID is 253 674 0617 and the passcode is ayrs but I don’t think you will need that information if you log on through the link above. \nThis will be our final Zoom meeting for winter 2022.  We will then break off for the summer.  At our January Zoom meeting I asked those present whether they would like these meetings to continue next autumn and the response seemed to be a ‘yes’.  I do wonder if Saturday evening is the best day of the week for this\, let me know if you have any thoughts on that\, also let me know if you have ideas for subjects/speakers for future meetings – email chairman@ayrs.org \n

SUMMARY:RYA Dinghy and Watersports Show
DESCRIPTION:The AYRS will be on stand F12 at the RYA Dinghy Show at Farnborough in 2022. \nWe expect the centrepiece of our display to be a 6m tall prototype reefable wingsail built by AYRS member Charles Magnan and we will also display a hydrofoil assembly instrumented with strain gauges to measure hydrodynamic forces.  Do drop in at our stand to chat\, or if you are not yet a member maybe even to join us – our annual subsciption is only £10 for receiving our publications electronically or £20 to receive them on paper. \nI think we had a really good display on our stand at the most recent RYA Dinghy Show pre-covid in 2020 – picture below – we hope to do at least as well in 2022!

SUMMARY:Monthly Zoom Meeting - Kim Fisher will tell us about Parabeam
DESCRIPTION:For our February monthly Zoom meeting Kim Fisher will tell us about his experiments with using Parabeam and I think also how he is using Parabeam with a hull mould made by draping an elastic membrane over a ‘skeleton’ framework – an innovative way to quickly make curvy 3D shapes. \nParabeam is a way of making a fairly lightweight fibreglass panel approximately 3mm thick with just one layer of reinforcement material.  Kim has kindly sent me a sample\, photo at left shows an edge of the reinforcement material.  It is a thick ‘spongy’ fabric and when you wet it out with resin the outside surfaces get fully impregnated but the central region is mostly air filled\, so it automatically forms a kind of sandwich structure with a single wetting out operation. I had better not say more\, or I will spoil Kim’s talk! \nThe link to join this meeting is: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/2536740617?pwd=VFdMOGxWRDNzK1Z4NkxpTkU1a3ZUZz09 \nThe meeting ID is 253 674 0617 and the passcode is ayrs but I dont think you will need that information if you log on through the link above. \nThis will be our pen-ultimate Zoom meeting for this Spring\, after a March meeting we will break off and maybe restart in the Autumn\, but we will have to consider that over the summer.  Over the past few months our Zoom meetings have lost the popularity they enjoyed over 2019\, maybe the need was only during the first stages of covid-19.   Having said that\, arranging a Zoom meeting as just an informal on-line ‘bar chat’ as opposed to a formal presentation is very easily done\, if there is demand for that we can certainly send out a monthly link for as long as even a handful of members choose to log on.   Maybe Saturday is not the best day of the week\, do let us know your thoughts.  (email chairman@ayrs.org).

SUMMARY:All-Day Meeting in Surrey (embracing our AGM)
DESCRIPTION:Important note: \nThis meeting will only happen as a ‘face to face’ event if covid rules at the time allow that. Should we be unable to meet as planned we still intend to hold our AGM at 2:00pm on January 23rd\, but by Zoom only. \nAssuming that we are able to hold this meeting at the Basingstoke Canal Centre\, we ask all those who attend in person to provide evidence (e.g. photo on mobile phone) of a NEGATIVE Covid-19 Rapid Self Test (Rapid Lateral Flow Test) which has been carried out within the last forty eight hours prior to the meeting. These tests can be carried out at home and at the time of writing test kits are available free of charge.  You can have test kits sent to your home\, or you can collect them from designated pick up sites\, most of which are pharmacies such as Boots or Superdrug\, or you can be tested at a covid testing centre.   A pack of tests will be taken to the venue for any member attending who has not carried out a test prior to their arrival. \nFor further information about covid-19 rapid lateral flow tests see here:  NHS Webpage about Rapid Lateral Flow Tests \nTo order free test kits sent to your home go here:   Government webpage to order test kits sent to your home \n To find a local collection point for free test kits enter your location at this NHS webpage NHS Webpage for finding a local collection point \nWe hope that those attending our meeting will be happy to comply with this plan and that we will all feel (and be) safer at the meeting knowing that the other people present have tested negative.\n \n\nThis meeting offers a whole day of chat and presentations about AYRS members’ projects and new developments in sailing and will also include the AGM of our society. The AGM will commence at 2:00pm and will be broadcast by Zoom so that distant members can attend and vote.\n \nAlthough this is an ‘all-day’ meeting you can arrive and leave as you wish. Bring your pictures/video/posters/hardware to show other members. If you have a more formal presentation you could let the chairman (chairman@ayrs.org.uk) know in advance to be sure we can fit you in\, but that is not essential. Presentations by members about their projects has been the main content of these meetings but presentations about sailing holidays or general discussion of boating topics or development of the AYRS are also welcome. Do also bring along models\, items of equipment\, books etc. for members to inspect and discuss during our coffee breaks. We expect to have a PC with a good sized screen available (or possibly a digital projector) so that video and digital pictures can be displayed. \nNote that the Basingstoke Canal Centre (BCC) is not actually at Basingstoke – it is at Mytchet near Farnborough. Driving\, it is a few minutes off the M3 and for public transport Farnborough has two stations with quite fast services from Waterloo. Car parking is available at the site. \nTea & coffee will be available through the day. The Basingstoke Canal Centre has an on-site cafe which we understand is open through the year and it does have outdoor seating as well as indoor. If any members would like to meet for a meal after the meeting then Potters Steakhouse would be a possibility\, it is next door to the BCC. Potters Steakhouse has rooms available which could be an option if you need overnight accommodation. For alternative accommodation (for the hardy I think) the BCC has its own camping field and according to their website this is available all the year round! \nAll our meetings are open to all those who share an interest in the technical aspects of boating\, so members and non-members are welcome\, (although only members may vote at the AGM). Donations will be invited to pay for the meeting room and for a supply of tea/coffee. \nWe aim to gather from 10:00 to start our meeting at 10:45am.

SUMMARY:January Zoom Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our January Zoom meeting will be an opportunity to discuss options for the future development of our Society.  We have two proposals to be considered under Any Other Business at our forthcomming AGM\, (Click here for our AGM announcement) this Zoom meeting will be an opportunity for a preliminary discussion of these proposals in advance of the AGM. \nAlso\, if you have an idea for an AYRS event your proposal would be welcome and if you are prepared to help with any arrangements necessary to make that event happen that could be even better! An AYRS summer event could be as simple as a sugestion for a waterside venue\, perhaps a pub or restaurant\, together with a date\, where we would invite members to meet\, with or without watercraft\, for a social evening and perhaps a chance to crew on other members’ boats the following day. An AYRS winter event could be as simple as an invitation for members to meet to view and discuss a particular project\, or projects in general. Our North West Local Group has been very successful in holding this kind of event\, often meeting in each others homes\, it would be good for this to happen in other areas. \nThe link to join this Zoom meeting is: \nhttps://www.google.com/url?q=https://us06web.zoom.us/j/2536740617?pwd%3DVFdMOGxWRDNzK1Z4NkxpTkU1a3ZUZz09&sa=D&source=calendar&usd=2&usg=AOvVaw2-92r4K9TJ5AbbfXJNcPta \nThe Meeting ID: 253 674 0617\nPasscode: ayrs

SUMMARY:December Zoom Meeting - Building a Stornoway 16 Sailing Dinghy - Steve Goodchild
DESCRIPTION:For our December Zoom meeting Steve Goodchild will tell us how he built a beautiful 16′ strip planked ‘Stornoway 16’ sailing dinghy – picture above.   Steve is an experienced woodworker\, at one time he owned and ran a woodworking and furniture making factory in Malawi\, but this was his first boat building project. The first\, but not the last\, perhaps he will also tell us about another boat building project that followed this one. \nI hope that this meeting will show that the AYRS is not just about experimental boats but is also relevant to the building of practical boats for everday use – even if a boat building project produces a fairly conventional end result there is plenty of scope for inovation\, both in the details and fittings and in the construction methods.  I think this will be well demonstrated by Steve’s project. \nIf you would like a preview to Steve’s presentation\, the Stornoway 16 is a design by Selway Fisher and the example built by Steve is featured at this webpage:   https://epoxycraft.com/projects/building-a-stornoway-16-part-3/https://epoxycraft.com/projects/building-a-stornoway-16-part-3/ \nLooking to the future\, Steve used 3D printing to make some of the parts for this project and I am hoping that Steve will be able to contribute to a future Zoom meeting about this technique. \n

SUMMARY:November Zoom Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our November Zoom meeting will\, as usual\, be second Saturday of the month but it will not be at the usual time.    We plan to broadcast this meeting from the venue where we will be holding a ‘real’ meeting that day in Surry UK.  Holding the Zoom meeting during the afternoon will\, we hope\, allow us to share a selected part of the ‘real’ meeting with a wider audience and to include remote members in questions and discussion.  This will be experimental\, please bear with us if we have technical problems.  If all goes reasonably well we plan to hold our AGM at the same Surrey venue while also using Zoom to include distant members. \nThe part of the ‘real’ meeting which we will share by Zoom is likely to include one or two members talking about their own projects\, questions and discussion to follow. \nFor details of the ‘real’ meeting venue and how to attend ‘in person’ please see the separate announcement here: November meeting at Basingstoke Canal Centre

The Basingstoke Canal Centre is not actually at Basingstoke – it is at Mytchet near Farnborough.  I think this should be a reasonably accessible location for a large part of our membership – driving\, it is a few minutes off the M3 and for public transport Farnborough has two stations with quite fast services from Waterloo. Plenty of car parking available at the site. \nTea & coffee will be available through the day.  The Basingstoke Canal Centre has an on-site cafe which is normally open thoughout the day\, however our information as at 26th October is that this cafe is temporarily closed but it is hoped that it will be open again in November.  We will update this webpage a couple of days in advance of the meeting to advise current availablity of the cafe.  If the on-site cafe is not open members will need to bring their own packed lunches\, (or maybe visit Potters Steakhouse – the pub next door to the BCC)    If any members would like to meet for a meal after the meeting then Potters Steakhouse would be a possiblity for that\, they also have rooms available which could be an option if you need overnight accommodation.  For alternative accommodation (for the hardy I think) the BCC has its own camping field and according to their website this is available all the year round! \nAll our meetings are open to all those who share an interest in the technical aspects of boating\, so members and non-members welcome. Donations will be invited to pay for the meeting room and for a supply of tea/coffee. \nWe will aim to gather from 10:30 to start our meeting proper at 11:00am. \nFrom 2:30am we will broadcast part of this meeting by Zoom for the benefit of geographically distant members.  We will aim for a Zoom broadcast of about one hour and within this period we will attempt to show one or two members projects with remote members being included in questions and discussion.  This is rather experimental\, at least for our Society it is\, so I hope that members will bear with us if we do find we have problems\, technical or otherwise.  It should be good practice for our AGM which we also plan to broadcast by Zoom while also holding it ‘face to face’ for those who are local to the meeting venue. \nHolding this meeting at the BCC does not necessarily mean that we will never again hold meetings at Thorpe Village Hall (TVH)\, but we do need a broadband connection for Zoom\, we understand that this is not currently available at Thorpe Village Hall. \n

SUMMARY:Weymouth Speedweek 2021
DESCRIPTION:Weymouth Speed Week is the oldest and longest-running speed sailing event in the world. Held annually since 1972\, it has challenged sailors of a wide variety of wind-powered craft to sail as fast as they can over a distance of 500m with their speed being recorded as the average speed over that distance. \nToday’s competitors comprise kite boarders\, sail boarders and boaters. They compete over a 500m course laid out in Portland Harbour. The number of courses and their positions can vary each day according to the prevailing and anticipated wind conditions. Each course has a start line and each competitor is free to choose their best angle to maximise their speed. Each competitor’s run is now accurately measured by GPS with the recorded GPS data processed each day to generate the results for each of the competition classes. Competitors are also free to put in as many runs as they can; on a windy day\, the course can be a constant buzz as the competitors relentlessly charge up and down to find the best wind. \nSailing fast is not simply about sailing in strong winds; whilst strong winds provide the basis for a fast run\, a sailor’s ability to sail efficiently and consistently is highly important. Sailing fast in less-than-perfect winds presents an opportunity to demonstrate a sailor’s skill and judgement. \nWeymouth Speed Week is a unique event. All sailors with an interest in speed sailing are invited to compete and there are no restrictions upon the craft you may sail – experimental craft are particularly welcome. There are\, in fact\, few rules to who can compete; so long as your craft is wind-powered\, it is eligible. The event has attracted some of the world’s top professional and record-holding sailors over the years. The event allows first-time competitors to compete with professionals on the same course – not something normally offered by other events.

SUMMARY:Eastern Region Local Group - Inaugural meeting
DESCRIPTION:Kim Fisher is setting up this first meeting of an AYRS local group primarily for members living in East Anglia\, although as with other AYRS meetings\, all are welcome\, from any part of the world. \nThe conference room at the Alton Watersports Centre is booked for this event\, and will be available to us from 10:00am.  The format of the meeting is expected to be similar to that we have followed for our meetings at Thorpe Village Hall – that means that the meeting will continue until around 5:00pm but those who do not wish to stay the whole day join and leave as they wish. \nThe conference room has coffee/tea making facilities and a Video Projector/Screen. It is believed that WiFi is also available. There is a cafe available BUT in another building on the reservoir site so Kim says ‘Please bring your own lunch’ – i.e. packed lunch – sandwiches etc.  The AYRS will make no charge for this meeting but assuming that you travel by car you will need to pay a £6.00 parking fee to the Alton Watersports Centre. The car park will be open from 09:00 to 18:00. \nKim writes:  This first meeting is to sort out how we organise ourselves and what we want to do going forward. I am suggesting we base it around the ‘Thorpe Village Hall’ agenda of – News\, who has seen what? and ‘mini’ presentations from members and guests with lots of questions. + any boat/bits/demos \nKim is hoping to bring his boat ‘Quill’ (crab claw – tacking Proa) and the ‘Yellow Alert’ (forward rowing boat) to this meeting for trips on the water\, other members may also bring boats but should pop into the centre reception to pay a day launch fee\, sign on and collect a safety wristband. Craft using the water must have adequate third party insurance.  For further information about the centre and use of the water contact Graham Colam who Kim has been dealing with and who knows who AYRS are – gColam@anglianwater.co.uk   01473 328408. \n

SUMMARY:SailGP coming to Plymouth UK!
DESCRIPTION:SailGP is coming to Plymouth UK over the weekend of  17/18 July 2021 (of course\, that will be subject to the virus situation at the time).   The SailGP events are for the F50 Catamarans that have been developed from the boats that contested the America’s Cup during 2017. They are now a tightly controlled one-design class but the design rule is not frozen\, rather it is further developed each year by consultation with the racing teams which number eight at the time of writing. These boats have two element rigid wing sails and an 8.8m beam so they are difficult boats to handle on shore – presumably there is a plan for handling the boats on shore at Plymouth but I cannot guess what that plan might be! The F50 racing should be spectacular to watch\, the speeds possible are on a par with those achieved with the AC75 foiling monohulls. We hope it will be spectacular rather than downright dangerous – during the recent Bermuda SailGP event the Japanese boat tacked too late to avoid the US boat which was on starboard – no one was injured but the collision and resulting damage took both boats out of the race series. \nA handful of AYRS members have now told me that they would like to meet up during the weekend of the Plymouth SailGP\, more are welcome.  I have been in contact with Cargreen Yacht Club which is on the Tamar above Saltash and the club Social Secretary has offered to help us set up and cook a waterside barbeque at CYC on the evening of Saturday 17 July.  That club can also offer visitor’s moorings for any AYRS members visiting Plymouth by sea – details at CYC website. As for watching the SailGP racing\, there are several options set out at this web page: https://sailgp.com/races/great-britain-sail-grand-prix-tickets/   There are two free of charge options\, one for watching from on-shore at Plymouth Hoe and one for watching from your own boat. There are also paid for options which I think are intended to give a slightly better vantage point together with complementary drinks and such like.   Josephine and myself will probably choose one of the free options and although it could be fun to watch from the water I am guessing that watching from the high ground of Plymouth Hoe might actually give the better view of the racing. And if any AYRS members visiting Plymouth over the weekend of SailGP would like to sail together maybe we could arrange a day-sail or even a short cruise in company either before or after the event.  There is extensive fairly sheltered estuary sailing in the vicinity of Plymouth so both yachts and road transportable boats could be included in this.

SUMMARY:ZOOM Mtg. - Reuben Thomson tells us about his 'Mini-Skiff'
DESCRIPTION:Our next AYRS Zoom meeting will be on Saturday 12 June 2021 at 19:30 BST.  For this meeting Reuben Thompson will tell us about the design\, building and sailing of his ‘mini-skiff’ – picture above. This is a tiny performance sailing dinghy only 7 foot 7 inches in hull length but with trapeze ‘racks’ and a laser mainsail plus a foresail set on a good length bowsprit.  There is a video clip showing Reuben sailing the mini-skiff at this link:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMH2X5SUGNk   This video is a bit shaky\, but it does show that the mini-skiff sails well.  It rather reminds me of the pictures of over-canvassed Australian sailing boats that Alan Smith showed at our previous meeting\, including the ‘6 Foot’ class that is even shorter than the mini-Skiff. \n \nThe Zoom link to join this online meeting is: \nhttps://zoom.us/j/2536740617?pwd=VFdMOGxWRDNzK1Z4NkxpTkU1a3ZUZz09 \nIf you need it\, the Meeting ID is 253 674 0617\nand the passcode is ayrs \, but if you use the meeting ID above I think you will come in without needing the password. \nPlease note that followng our Zoom meeting on 12 June we will break off our monthly Zoom meetings until October – We imagine that many of our members would rather spend the weekends of the peak northern hemisphere sailing season afloat or at their sailing clubs rather than looking at a computer.  So\, keeping to the second Saturday of the month\, our next Zoom meeting after June will be on Saturday 9 October. This happens to be the first Saturday of Weymouth Speedweek (covid permitting) – see https://www.speedsailing.com – so we may be able to host that Zoom meeting from the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Centre and possibly get some input from organisers and competitors.  Also\, as for previous Weymouth Speedweeks\, on the Wednesday of the week\, that is 13th October\, we plan to hold an AYRS meeting (not an on-line meeting) in Weymouth to which all are welcome.

SUMMARY:AYRS Zoom meeting - Presentation by Alan Smith
DESCRIPTION:Our next Amateur Yacht Research Society Zoom meeting will be on 8th May 2021 at 20:00 BST – Note that this is half an hour later than usual.  For this meeting we have a presentation by Alan Smith about the development of sails\, which is a slight change of subject from our previous announcment\, the dynamics of foiling yachts will probably be for some future occasion.  Alan has asked me to circulate a hand out in advance of this meeting\, so this is a link: \nhttps://www.ayrs.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/2021-05-08-Hand-out-for-Alan-Smith-talk-on-sails.pdf \nAlan lives about 100 miles NE of Melbourne in Australia and because of the time difference Alan will join the meeting at around 20:30 BST\, this is still very early morning for him. I am sure we can find something to talk about in the half hour before Alan joins the meeting. \nAlan joined the AYRS at the Earls Court boat show in 1960.  At that time he was working as the liaison engineer to the British army for the Australian Malkara anti tank weapon. Then in 1966/1967 he studied for an MSc in aircraft stability and control at Cranfield\, his thesis was on yacht dynamics. In 1967 he sailed with Tom Vaughan in International 14’s\, mainly at Richmanswoth\, and he raced in the Prince of Wales week out of Cowes. He worked with Tom and Jeremy Pudney to modernise the International 14 and to incorporate the Australian 14 ft skiff class.  Alan’s professional life was developing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and he regards Nulka as the high point\, this being an Australian built anti-missile decoy system. Alan considers that there is a strong synergy between his professional life and his longstanding interest in fast sailing. \nYou can join this meeting by clicking on this link (or copying and pasting it into your browser): \nhttps://zoom.us/j/2536740617?pwd=VFdMOGxWRDNzK1Z4NkxpTkU1a3ZUZz09\nIf you need it (you shouldn’t do if you use the link above)\, the Meeting ID is: 253 674 0617 and the Passcode is: ayrs \n(We are setting a simple password for these meetings because this avoids people having to go into a waiting room before joining the meeting) \nRemember that AYRS meetings\, both conventional meetings and on-line meetings\, are open to all\, so do feel free to pass these details to friends who may be interested. \nAgain – note that this meeting will start half an hour later than usual (although I will log in at the usual time just in case that message has not reached everyone!) \n

SUMMARY:AYRS Zoom Meeting - A Small Catamaran and I-Wood
DESCRIPTION:A last minute change of plan for the AYRS April Zoom meeting – we now have two members who would like to give short presentations: \nGiuseppe Gigliobianco will tell us about a small catamaran he built and Chris Scott about ‘I-Wood’ so I sugest we make these the main subject for this meeting rather than a discussion about the AC75 which was previously announced on this website. \nI-Wood is Chris’s concept for a way to use timber that makes best use of smaller logs and is suitable for easy assembly from pre-cut kits of timber parts.  Chris may also include applications to wooden boat building and he also has ideas for building vertical axis wind turbines – ‘Squirrel Cage Power Poles’. \nThese are some links that Chris has sent for video about I-Wood: \nWhat is I-Wood – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EB8cbjsCoI \n100q.ft. SUMMARY:Zoom meeting - talk by John Welsford - joint with the Dinghy Cruising Association
DESCRIPTION:A change of plan for our monthly Zoom meeting on 13th February – The new plan is that we attend a presentation by small craft designer John Welsford\, this presentation having been arranged by the Dinghy Cruising Association (see dinghycruising.org.uk)  The date and time that the DCA planned for this presentation happened to exactly coincide with the timing of our regular AYRS monthly Zoom meeting so arranging for AYRS members to join the DCA audience avoids a clash and gives us a chance to see a presentation by a well known designer of small sailing craft. For further information about the work of John Welsford see his website at: http://www.jwboatdesigns.co.nz \nAYRS members who would like to attend the presentation by John Welsford need to register for it ASAP by going to this link: \nhttps://www.dinghycruising.org.uk/agm.html \nFrom the above link you will see two registration forms\, one for the DCA AGM and a second one lower on the page for John Welsford’s talk. Unless you are a member of the DCA\, only fill in the second form then click the register button.  The simple form requires a name\, email address and DCA membership number. AYRS members should enter ‘AYRS’ for membership number.   In due course the DCA will email you a link to join the Zoom meeting.   The reason for having to register is that this talk may be popular so we need to know if there is a need to arrange a Zoom account upgrade to cater for more than 100 participants.

SUMMARY:AYRS Annual General Meeting (on Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:AYRS Meeting Host is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. \nThis year\, because of COVID\, AYRS is taking its AGM online. The timing\, somewhat later than usual\, is so that members in America and Australasia may participate without too much discomfort.\nAgenda\, Committee report and other papers will be posted in the AYRS Forum https://www.ayrs.org/forum.\nNote: AYRS desperately needs new Committee members\, especially those with computer skills\, to fulfil the roles of Secretary\, and Treasurer/Membership Secretary! SUMMARY:CANCELLED - AYRS South-East UK meeting
DESCRIPTION:This face-to-face event is now cancelled due to COVID restrictions. \n  \n  \n  \nWriting this update at the end of the September it seems quite likely that we will have to cancel this meeting and also revise our arrangements for our AGM which we had planed to follow on from this meeting. \nHowever\, if the virus situation does improve by the end of 2019 allowing us to follow our original plan then this meeting will be held at a new venue – the meeting room of the Basingstoke Canal Centre which is near Farnborough in Surrey – note that it is not actually at Basingstoke! \nSo\, if we can follow the original plan we will have a morning and afternoon of chat and presentations about members’ projects and new developments in sailing\, followed by the AGM of the society which will be separately announced. \nAlthough this event covers several hours you can arrive and leave as you wish. Bring your pictures/video/posters/hardware to show other members. If you have a more formal presentation you could let the organiser know in advance to be sure we can fit you in\, but that is not essential. \nTea & coffee available through the day and there is an on site cafe for lunch so it is not essential to bring a packed lunch.   If you arrive before 10:00am you should be able to enjoy a tea or coffee\, or even breakfast\, in the on-site café. \nAs with other AYRS events\, this meeting is open to all who are interested in sailing technology so do invite friends along. \nDonations invited to pay for the hall. \n

SUMMARY:AYRS Zoom Meeting - Christmas Party
DESCRIPTION:At our November Zoom meeting I asked for a show of hands for a Zoom ‘Christmas Party’ and a handful of people were interested so I have scheduled an extra informal meeting for Saturday 5th December. It can hardly be a traditional Christmas Party\, although I will not mind if people turn up with fancy hats and tell us funny stories or interesting things that happened to them during our abbreviated sailing season. We might also use this meeting to try out the Zoom ‘Breakout Room’ feature. This allows the meeting to divide into smaller groups\, say four people to a group\, for a set period of time\, say ten minutes\, then re-convene. This is a way for people to get to know each other and I have seen it work well with Zoom meetings of another organisation. \nLink to join Zoom Meeting:\nhttps://zoom.us/j/2536740617 \nMeeting ID: 253 674 0617\nOne tap mobile\n+13017158592\,\,2536740617# US (Germantown)\n+13126266799\,\,2536740617# US (Chicago) \nDial by your location\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\nMeeting ID: 253 674 0617\nFind your local number: https://zoom.us/u/adUa0P78R0

SUMMARY:Zoom Meeting - Skip Johnson presents his latest proa project
DESCRIPTION:As part of our August Zoom meeting Skip Johnson gave us a short summary of his proa building and sailing over the years.  For our October meeting Skip will go into more detail on his latest proa\, boat name ‘Trivial Obsession”- photo below.  This boat is now built\, just waiting for the Labor day holiday to end so traffic and boating chaos eases for the new boat to be launched and start trials.  By the time of our October meeting Skip may well have some on-water experience with the new boat. \nNote for those overseas from the UK – the times announced for AYRS Zoom meetings are British Standard Time (BST).
