SUMMARY:Zoom Meeting - Bernard Rhodes tells us about sailing to Japan on 'Flying Carpet'
DESCRIPTION:For our November Zoom meeting Bernard Rhodes who lives on Waiheke Island\, New Zealand gave us a fascinating presentation about designing and building his 10m cruising catamaran ‘Flying Carpet’.  This catamaran has a ‘biplane’ rig\, i.e. a mast in each hull and the individual mainsails are themselves innovative being two skin sails\, perhaps a forerunner to the ‘soft wingsails’ used on current America’s Cup yachts. \nFor our December Zoom meeting Bernard will continue on from our November meeting by showing us pictures from a trip to Japan on the Flying Carpet. \nAlso – This will be our last Zoom meeting prior to our AGM on 21st January 2024 so it is an opportunity for members to mention any matter they think should be considered at the AGM or to nominate new AYRS committee members. \nThe meeting will be at 19:30 London Time\, which at this time of year is also UTC. \nThe link to join the meeting is: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/2536740617?pwd=VFdMOGxWRDNzK1Z4NkxpTkU1a3ZUZz09&omn=84273146286 \nThe meeting ID is: 253 674 0617 and the passcode is: ayrs  but I dont think you will need those if you join through the link.

DESCRIPTION:Zoom Link: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/2536740617?pwd=VFdMOGxWRDNzK1Z4NkxpTkU1a3ZUZz09 \nThe meeting ID is 253 674 0617 and the passcode is ayrs but I dont think you will need those if you join the meeting through the link above. \nFor this first Zoom meeting of our Winter series perhaps members would like to talk about the boating adentures they enjoyed over the summer? \nWe are continuing with Zoom meetings over the coming winter months since they offer the only opportunity for many of our widely dispersed membership to ‘meet’. Different days of the week suit different people so we propose to hold these meetings on different days of the week\, that way the dates should suit most members for at least some of the meetings. All these meetings start at 7:30pm London time\, unless otherwise announced. We normally use a standard Zoom link which will be on our website at ayrs.org/events and will also be announced to members by email. If we can\, we will have prepared presentations for some of the meetings but when no such presentation is available the meetings will follow the format of a chat/discussion at a sailing club bar – so far we have always found topics to talk about and the main difficulty has been closing the meeting within a reasonable period – we aim for one hour. \n

SUMMARY:Weymouth Speedweek with AYRS meeting on the Wednesday evening
DESCRIPTION:Once again the AYRS will hold a technical meeting on the Wednesday evening of Speedweek\, this year that Wednesday evening will be 11th October 2023 and as for the past few years the venue will be the Weymouth Sailing Club.   Speedweek is based at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy at Portland (WPNSA)\, this is at the southern end of the causeway onto Portland island.  The Weymouth Sailing Club where we hold our AYRS Wednesday evening meeting is in Weymouth\, near the sea end of the quay on the west side of the harbour. \nSpectators are welcome on any day of Speedweek but if you are coming for just one day there are usually a few AYRS members gathered at the WPNSA on the Wednesday afternoon then we go into Weymouth for a fish+chip supper before going to the Weymouth Sailing Club for the start of our AYRS Speedweek meeting at 19:30. \nSpeedweek is not an AYRS event but the AYRS has a long association with this annual event.  Although most of the Speedweek entrants are boardsailors\, there were some notable exceptions last year.   We probably will not have so many ‘boats’  (Speedweek people refer to anything that is not a board as a boat) at Speedweek this year but entries are accepted even on the day so still time to register on the Speedweek website – https://weymouthspeedweek.com.   If you have an experimental boat that is ready to try out this could be a good event for sea trials even if you dont want to sail competively – good slipways\, parking\, safety boat cover\, often strong wind and flatish water\, willing helpers with launch and recovery and other enthusiasts to chat with.  And if you have a realy fast boat\, perhaps on foils\, there is a real possiblity that you could be faster than the boards\, at least under certain conditions – Kyle Stoneham’s Vampire catamaran was faster than any board on a lightish wind day last year. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Innov-Sail 2023
DESCRIPTION:Not an AYRS event but it may be of interest to some of our members. The following is extracted from the event website: \n‘Over three days\, the conference will provide an international forum for the presentation and discussion of the latest scientific and technological research and its application in the complex field of sailing on the topics of wind assisted ship propulsion as well as competitive sailing. \nINNOV’SAIL 2023 will offer a unique opportunity to scientists\, naval architects\, engineers\, sailors\, ship owners\, sail makers\, ship and yacht builders\, rig specialists and others involved in this fascinating and challenging field to come together to share skills and know-how.’ \nOviously a conference to suit the needs of professionals but I expect that there may well be plenty to interest technically minded AYRS members if you can find your way to Lorient next May.   As far as I know details of cost are not yet available. There is a call for papers with a deadline 17 October 2022.

SUMMARY:Talk by Richard Pemberton - 'What does Net Zero mean to the recreational sailor' - University of Plymouth
DESCRIPTION:This talk will now be shared as hybrid meeting on Zoom: \n – the Zoom link is: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/2536740617?pwd=VFdMOGxWRDNzK1Z4NkxpTkU1a3ZUZz09%20 \nMeeting ID: 253 674 0617     Passcode: ayrs (but I dont think you need those if you join through the link above) \nThis AYRS South West UK meeting will be held in Reynolds building room G1 on the University of Plymouth campus in Devon UK. The campus is in the centre of the city\, a short walk from the main railway station – I have circled the building in red on the map below\, the railway station is at the top left of the map. I understand that parking within the campus is free after 4pm and there are also several multistory carparks close by in the city centre. We have the room from 5:00 so if you do arrive say half an hour early we can discuss possiblities for future AYRS activities in the south west of the UK. \n \nThis talk is open to all so please feel free to invite friends or post a notice about it at your local sailing club. \nDr Richard Pemberton writes:  ‘As with road transport\, the UK government has set ambitious targets for the maritime industry to be operating in at net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. Whilst recreational sailors are generally looking to use their motors as little as possible\, what are the implications for them of the transition from fossil fuels to alternative technologies? This talk will discuss the current alternative energy sources\, and will look at how they may be adopted by recreational sailors. ‘ \nDr. Richard Pemberton started his career in the area of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)\, working as a designer or technical consultant to sailors and yacht racing teams in many of the major competitions within the sport\, such as the America’s Cup\, Volvo Ocean Race\, Vendee Globe race\, the Olympics and the World Speed Sailing Record. \nBefore joining the University of Plymouth\, Richard worked as a consultant Naval Architect both in a self-employed capacity and at the University of Southampton’s Wolfson Unit for Marine Technology and Industrial Aerodynamics. In these roles\, Richard achieved Chartered Engineer status with RINA and has now worked on 5 Innovate UK funded Clean Maritime Demonstrator Competition research projects in the area of Maritime Decarbonisation.

SUMMARY:Talk at Little Ship Club in Central London - Note: this is the revised date for the event
DESCRIPTION:Kim Fisher is giving a talk titled ‘For the Love of Boats’ at the Little Ship Club which\, as the picture above shows\, is right on the River Thames within the City of London.   Kim’s talk is about the AYRS and about the sailing and boat building he has done over many years of AYRS membership.    Kim’s recent projects have included a ‘Rescue Float’ for use by beach rescue organisations and an innovative way of moulding boat hulls over stretched latex sheet.  He produces a constant stream of ideas and his craftsmanship rapidly translates those ideas into very well made prototypes. \nThis talk will be included in a regular program of winter meetings run by the Little Ship Club but will be open to AYRS members and their guests as well as to LSC members. So\, if you are in London area on Tuesday 25 April this is an opportunity to hear Kim’s talk in the comfortable clubhouse of a prestigous London yacht club. I believe that if you are coming to this talk you can book a meal at the club and possibly also overnight accommodation – contact the club for further information\, office telephone 020 7236 7729

SUMMARY:Zoom Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We are restarting our Zoom meetings on a trial basis for the first three months of 2023.  On-line meetings are the only way for many of the geographically spread AYRS membership to ever ‘meet’. \nWe will not attempt to provide a prepared presentation for each of these meetings\, although if anyone would like to offer a presentation on a particular boating topic do let us know (contact chairman@ayrs.org).  Rather\, we envisage most of these meetings to be informal\, although perhaps with a stated theme to focus on.  We might also start the meetings with brief announcements and a five to ten minute summary of what has been happening in the world of sailing and if that starts some discussion that is fine. \nWe don’t yet have a theme for this March meeting\, perhaps we can talk about that at the February meeting.   The link to join this meeting is: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/2536740617?pwd=VFdMOGxWRDNzK1Z4NkxpTkU1a3ZUZz09 \nThe passcode for the meeting is ayrs and the Meeting ID is 253 674 0617 but I don’t think you will need that if you join through the link.  We will open the link at about 19:15 London time\, for a meeting start at 19:30\,  closing the meeting at around 20:30.  We will not mind if you choose to leave early.

DESCRIPTION:The AYRS stand this year is stand K12. \nNote that if you are an RYA member you can have tickets for both days free – a nice bonus.  Also note that even if you are not an RYA member\, because the AYRS is exhibiting at the show\, we can offer those who look at the AYRS website a 10% discount off full adult tickets by using the code RYAEX23047 at the on-line ticket checkout – CLICK HERE \nThe show was hugely popular in 2022\, and our stand gained plenty of interest.  This year should be good too – we will be unveiling a new AYRS project from Kim Fisher – I can tell you that there will not be anything like it on any of the other stands! \nA few years ago our committee member Mike Howard made a map of the location of all the AYRS members in the UK and that showed that although our members are spread accross the UK\, and indeed the world\, we do have a concentration in the home counties and down the M3 corridor to the Solent and South coast so Farnborough in Surrey should suit all these members.   The show is just a few minutes from the M3 and I understand that there will also be a shuttle bus service running from Farnborough main station (trains from London Waterloo).   There is ample free parking on the site.   Go to the show website to order your tickets on-line\, that will save you queing.  Also note that if you are an RYA member you can have tickets for both days free – a nice bonus. \n \nThis was our stand last year – to the left you see the base of a soft wingsail – we were working till about 11:00am on the night before the show opened to get assembled and set up – I think the security guards were wondering about us by then!  To the right of your stand you see a hydrofoil that is instrumented with load cells and strain gauges to measure all the forces and moments\, that includes the bending moment transferred between the foil and strut when a foil set at a dihedral comes close to the water surface – I am not sure anyone else has measured that\, or if they have they may have kept their data to themselves. \nWe will need help to set up and take down our stand and to staff  it during the show.  If you would like to help contact please contact chairman@ayrs.org.   The cost of our stand does include a few free exhibitors passes\, but I think only three of these\, we have to pay for extra ones\, so it would be good to work out in advance how many we need. \n

SUMMARY:Zoom Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We are restarting our Zoom meetings on a trial basis for the first three months of 2023.  On-line meetings are the only way for many of the geographically spread AYRS membership to ever ‘meet’. \nWe will not attempt to provide a prepared presentation for each of these meetings\, although if anyone would like to offer a presentation on a particular boating topic contact chairman@ayrs.org.  Rather\, we envisage most of these meetings to be informal\, although perhaps with a stated theme to focus on.  We might also start the meetings with brief announcements and a five to ten minute summary of what has been happening in the world of sailing and if that starts some discussion that is fine. \nThe link to join this meeting is: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/2536740617?pwd=VFdMOGxWRDNzK1Z4NkxpTkU1a3ZUZz09 \nThe passcode for the meeting is ayrs and the Meeting ID is 253 674 0617 but I don’t think you will need those details if you join through the link.  We will open the link at about 19:15 London time\, for a meeting start at 19:30\,  closing the meeting at around 20:30.  We will not mind if you choose to leave early. \nI am not sure which day of the week will best suit our members\, so I have scheduled this meeting for a Wednesday and the March meeting for a Monday\, that way those who have recuring events on a particular day of the week will have a chance to attend at least on of these meetings. meetings.

SUMMARY:'All-day' discussion meeting - (with AGM included during the afternoon)
DESCRIPTION:We meet at the Basinstoke Canal Centre meeting room to talk about our projects and our boating activities. This can include boating holidays as well as construction or research projects.  And\, as in previous years\, we will embed our AGM within this meeting during the afternoon – see separate announcement for our AGM. \nAlthough we call this an ‘All-day’ meeting feel free to come and leave as you wish.  We usually have a mixture of informal discussion and prepared presentations\, if you have a particular subject you wish to talk about you might like to let me know in advance so that I can ensure you get a ‘time slot’ and if you like even an advance mention on this webpage.  Also\, do feel free to bring your portable hardware along to show other members. We will provide either a digital projector or a large screen so members can show digital material.  The meeting room has a WiFi system which we will use with Zoom to make our AGM available to the wider AYRS membership and maybe we will also share a part of the technical meeting by Zoom\, possibly a ‘keynote’ presentation to follow the AGM. \nTea\, coffee and biscuits will be available in the meeting room.  For lunch you can bring your own sandwiches but you don’t have to since the BCC has an onsite cafe which serves hot and cold food.  Also\, there is a pub next door to the BCC\, this could be an option for an evening meal after the meeting if that is of interest. \nNote that the BCC is not actually at Basingstoke – it is at Mytchett near Farnborough in Surrey\, postcode GU16 6DD.  – just a few minutes off the M3 motorway.

SUMMARY:Zoom Meeting - Sharing photos of sailing in 2022
DESCRIPTION:The AYRS Zoom meetings held during the covid ‘lockdowns’ were popular\, and I think appreciated\,  but interest dwindled for the last few meetings held in spring of 2022.  It did not seem worthwhile holding these meetings over the summer of 2022 but we have now decided to start them again on a trial basis for the first three months of 2023. \nFor this first meeting I suggest the theme can be members sailing pictures from 2022\, so if you have ‘holiday snaps’ from your cruising or racing last season do share them using the Zoom ‘screenshare’ facility. \nI am not sure which day of the week will best suit our members\, so I have scheduled this meeting for a Tuesday\, the February meeting for a Wednesday and the March meeting for a Monday\, that way those who have recuring events on a particular day of the week will be able to come to at least some meetings.

SUMMARY:'All-day' technical discussion meeting

We will provide either a digital projector or a large screen so members can show digital material.  The meeting room has a WiFi system and we may use this to broadcast part of our meeting to the wider AYRS membership\, but I think we will probably keep any such broadcast to a limited period\, say one hour during the afternoon. \nThe Basingstoke Canal Centre is a waterside location with a slipway suitable for launching lightweight boats so I am thinking that if anyone would like to do a bit of canal exploration on the Sunday following this meeting we should be able to arrange that.  This slipway has a small step down at the water edge so it is not suitable for heavy boats but it is fine for canoes\, rowing boats\, yacht tenders\, paddleboards etc. Josephine and I will probably bring our 15foot rowing boat.   Unfortunately the canal is not suitable for boats with masts due to low bridges and overhanging trees. So let me know if you would like to join us  afloat on the Sunday following this Saturday meeting – email chairman@ayrs.org \nNote that the BCC is not actually at Basingstoke – it is at Mytchett near Farnborough in Surrey\, postcode GU16 6DD.  – just a few minutes off the M3 motorway.

SUMMARY:Weymouth Speedweek 2022
DESCRIPTION:2022 will be the 50th anniversary of Weymouth Speedweek!    Although this is not an AYRS event as such\, the AYRS has a long association with Speedweek and the AYRS will once again be holding a meeting on the Wednesday evening of Speedweek. For 2022 this will be October 19th and the meeting will be held at the Weymouth Sailing Club\,  Nothe Parade\,  DT4 8TX. I think the clubhouse will be open from 19:00.  These meetings are for discussing advances in sailing technology relating to all kinds of boat\, not just kites and boards. Indeed\, this year we are expecting at least a couple of rather special visitors to Speedweek and to our Wednesday meeting: \nBenoit Gaudiot\, a co-founder of the SP80 project plans to be at Speedweek – At our Wednesday evening meeting he will present his team’s project to challenge the unlimited world speed sailing record.   Like the current record holder Paul Larsen’s ‘SailRocket’\, the SP80 concept balances the lateral and upwards force from an inclined aerofoil with the lateral and downward force from an inclined hydrofoil. The most obvious difference is that whereas SailRocket connects the aerofoil and hydrofoil with a ridgid streamlined pole\, SP80 uses an advanced kite design as the aerofoil and connects this to the hydrofoil via kite strings.  For more detail see https://sp80.ch/ \nJames Grogono\, pioneer of Hydrofoil Sailing hopes to be at Speedweek and to give a presentation at the Wednesday evening meeting. James developed the Icarus hydrofoil catamaran that was the first sailing hydrofoil to sail in the UK and a new team is now working to restore this boat and get it sailing again.  If at all possible they will have it sailing at Weymouth this year but I hear that there is curently some uncertainty about finding a mast to complete the rig.  I would also mention that James has recently published his sailing autobiography titled ‘A Dozen Tots of Grog’.  This covers not only the early development of hydrofoil sailing but a wide variety of boating adventures in craft large and small. You can get a copy for £10 from Ebay.co.uk – just do a search in the Ebay search box for ‘A Dozen Tots of Grog’. \nIn recent years the great majority of  Weymouth Speedweek competitors have been kite and wind surfers\, so if you would like to see what world class kite and wind surfers can do these days just come to Weymouth Speedweek – its a free event for spectators. Both kites and windsurf boards are now sailing on hydrofoils and the equipment has improved so much that high speeds are achievable in quite light winds.  At the 2021 event\, around 30 knots was achieved with both kites and windsurf sails in something around Beaufort 3 – if you don’t think that is possible come to Portland in October and see for yourself!   Despite the majority of competors being on rather small boats (i.e. boards)\, Speedweek is about the development of performance sailing craft of all kinds. With hydrofoils now being applied to all sizes of sailing craft I expect we will see experimental boats back at Speedweek – I know that the AYRS does have members with appropriate projects underway.  Maybe this year\, but if not before too long I hope! \nchairman@ayrs.org \n

SUMMARY:SailGP on Plymouth Sound
DESCRIPTION:Last year a small number of AYRS members watched the SailGP racing in Plymouth Sound and it was spectacular.  SailGP is raced with the F50 class strict one-design hydrofoil catamarans.  These are possibly the fastest racing yachts in existence today\, a speed of 51.1 knots having been recorded. The AC75 Americas cup class claims similar or higher speeds\, to early so say for sure which is faster since the latest generation of AC75s are not yet afloat.  These are certainly exciting times for high performance sailing. \nIf members would like to watch SailGP at Plymouth this year perhaps we can arrange to meet up\, both to watch the racing and/or for a social gathering or meal afterwards.   Let me know if this is of interest – email chairman@ayrs.org.   It is a bit early to make definite plans but spectators can watch from Plymouth Hoe\, either by buying a ticket to the official viewing area that has the benefit of a commentary and close up screen\, or by joining the crowds that are likely to form along the road to the seaward side of the Hoe.   Or last year two of us found what could be an even better view point on the lane between Staddiscombe Heights and Jennicliff. \nAnother possiblity is to watch from afloat in Plymouth Sound.  I have an F32 trimaran (Ian Farrier design\, about 32 feet length) now afloat in Millbrook Creek near Plymouth Sound but I am still working on getting the rig functional – for one thing we have some broken sail battens to replace.  If we can have this boat available in the right area at the right time I would be pleased to take members on board to watch the SailGP racing.  For sailing the boat is intended to carry up to 5 persons but for motoring on the sound and watching the racing I think we could take carry more if necessary.   Let me know if this is of interest\, also let me know if you also have a vessel in the area which could accommodate spectators.  John
