SUMMARY:AYRS Zoom meeting
DESCRIPTION:For our Zoom meeting on Friday 6th March at 7:30pm AYRS member Reuben Thompson will tell us about the design and construction of his beautiful sailing dinghy.   This will be the final zoom meeting of this winter series\, we plan to restart our Zoom meetings in October. \nThe Zoom link for the meeting is below\, we aim to open the connection by 19:15 for a 19:30 start. (the link is also on the AYRS website under ‘events’)  After the talk and any questions we usually leave the connection open for a while so that members can chat.  Our Zoom meetings are open to all so do invite friends who may be interested. \nZoom link:\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/2536740617?pwd=VFdMOGxWRDNzK1Z4NkxpTkU1a3ZUZz09&omn=87610598270 \nThe Meeting ID is 253 674 0617 and the passcode is ayrs but I don’t think you need those if you join through the link (if it does not work when you click on it\, copy and paste it into your browser) \nA bit about Reuben: \nBack in June 2021 Reuben gave a talk to the AYRS about the sailing dinghy that he designed and built while still at school\,  you see from this picture that it had a lot of sail area on a tiny 7’7″ hull length. \n \nLeaving school\, Reuben took a boat building course at the Lyme Regis boat building academy then became resident boat builder/restorer at the Falmouth maritime museum.  He then took a degree in Marine Technology at  the University of Plymouth and following that moved to Ipswich to work as a yacht designer at Spirit Yachts\, builders of wooden super yachts.   By now he had designed and built the 18foot sailing boat that will be the subject of this Zoom meeting. It is only 4’6″ beam and is often sailed with the trapeze wires.   With this boat he made an amazing single handed open boat voyage clockwise around the UK from Ipswich to the Shetland Islands and from there to Norway where he and his wife are now living. \nIn 2021 Reubin sailed his boat at a DCA rally held in Cornwall\, this is a picture I took on that occasion.

SUMMARY:AYRS at the RYA Dinghy and Watersports Exhibition at the Farnborough International Exhibition Centre
DESCRIPTION:The AYRS will be exhibiting on stand G2 – its on the wall alongside the main corridor.  As in previous years we invite our members who visit the show to join us after the show ends on Saturday evening\, 21st February.  Contact chairman@ayrs.org for details of when and where. \nWe have not quite finalized the design of our stand at time of writing but are hoping that these will be our two main exhibits: \n\nA test rig to measure the stiffness of the hydrofoils – the kind used for kite boarding\, sail boarding\, wing boarding\, pump foiling etc.   The stiffness of the hydrofoil is a factor in how the board handles on the water and this project will put some numbers to a comparison of different boards from various manufacturers.\nAn early stage prototype for a new way to mount and control a hydrofoil on a sailing craft.    The prototype parts that we will display will later be tested by mounting them on a motor boat before considering the construction of a sailing craft of around 6m hull length that would be specifically designed and built for testing alternative foil configurations.  If successful\, this foil mounting concept should be scalable to larger sailing craft.\n\nOur volunteers will be setting up the stand on the Friday afternoon before the show. Let us know if you would like to come and help so that we can tell you where and when to meet and get you through security. Also\, if you do help on setting up day remember to bring a high visibility vest since the show organizers require every one on site that day to wear one.

SUMMARY:AYRS Zoom meeting
DESCRIPTION:For this meeting Paul Constantine will tell us about the swing rig on his self- designed and self-built cruising trimaran. A swing rig\, also sometimes referred to as a balestron rig\, or an Aerorig\, is a sail plan that has the mainsail boom extended forward of the mast so that the foresail tack can be attached to the forward extremity of this boom. This is generally achieved by having the boom as a wide enough structure so that the mast can pass up through it. As the mainsail is sheeted in and out\, the foresail and mainsail rotate together about the mast. The picture below shows the swing rig on Paul’s trimaran. \nSwing rig on Paul’s Trimaran\nPaul is an experienced home boat-builder. Previous to the trimaran covered in this talk Paul built a Kelsall-design 35 foot trimaran and he has helped with design and construction of various friends’ projects. Paul and his wife Alison have sailed a variety of craft over the years\, as well as the two trimarans he built. They have dinghy cruised in a 13foot Torch dinghy that Paul fitted with an ingenious camping cover for overnight accommodation. Having recently sold the second trimaran\, they will now be cruising in a 23foot monohull lift-keel yacht. \nPaul was the Cruising Secretary and National Secretary of MOCRA and editor of Multihull Magazines which covered the development of modern multihulls\, so he has a wide knowledge of the work of all the pioneer designers\, builders and sailors in this field. He has also written books about multihull Round Britain\, cruising and also dinghy cruising. He may still be able to offer some of these\, if you contact him at moonshine.pub@hotmail.co.uk \nZoom link: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/2536740617?pwd=VFdMOGxWRDNzK1Z4NkxpTkU1a3ZUZz09&omn=87647209374

SUMMARY:AYRS Zoom Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Mark Hillmann has been building a 30 foot proa over a number of years and 2025 was the year he launched it and sailed it on Lake Windermere.  Based on his sailing last year he does not want to continue with the project so has offered to tell us what he has found unsatisfactory and has titled this talk ‘Proa Failures’.   This is sad\, but perhaps we can learn something from his assessment. (the picture below shows the proa in 2024\, at that stage it did not have its proper rig\, just a couple of old sails that were used to test the sail hoisting arrangements). \n \nZoom link: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/2536740617?pwd=VFdMOGxWRDNzK1Z4NkxpTkU1a3ZUZz09&omn=86174704399

SUMMARY:AYRS Zoom Meeting
DESCRIPTION:For our December Zoom meeting Andrew Bedwell will tell us about his ‘Big C Atalantic Challenge’ – aiming to gain the record for crossing the Atlantic in the smallest ever boat and to support the Cancer Research UK charity in doing so. You can find more about Andrew’s BigC Atalantic Challenge at his Facebook page:Facebook Page \nAndrew has put a lot of thought\, and indeed research\, into preparing the vessel\, his supplies and himself for the attempt. His tiny boat looks to be very safe\, albeit rather slow – it is a robustly built sealed up metal capsule\, completely self-righting and with a simple and sturdy off wind rig – you can see some pictures at Andrew’s ‘Big C Atlantic Challenge’ Facebook page. This Autumn Andrew has been testing the boat and equipment off the coast of Cumbria. \nI would add that Andrew is an experienced sailor of more normally sized yachts\, for example a Farrier 28 trimaran which he sailed offshore single handed and a MiniTransat yacht with which he cruised in Artic waters. He is planning to design and build a small sailing boat for further Arctic adventures so I hope he will tell us a bit about his other sailing activities and his proposed new boat as well as the smallest boat challenge. \nAndrew has a Cancer Research donation page here:  Here \nZoom link: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/2536740617?pwd=VFdMOGxWRDNzK1Z4NkxpTkU1a3ZUZz09&omn=82784538229 \nThe meeting ID is 253 674 0617 and the passcode is ayrs but I dont think you need those if you join through the above link.

SUMMARY:Outing on the Basingstoke Canal
DESCRIPTION:For the last few years we have followed a Saturday November meeting at the Basingstoke Canal Centre with a canal outing on the Sunday of the weekend.   Only two of us took part last year but we did have a nice cruise from Crookham to the Barley Mow pub for lunch\, then return.   We were lucky to enjoy bright sunshine and the canal looked pretty with the autumn leaves.  Subject to weather at the time\, we propose to do something similar this year.  We may choose a different route this time\, this can be discussed at our meeting at the BCC the day before. \nThis would be suitable for canoes\, rowboats\, small motor boats\, I think also stand up paddle-boards\, but not boats with masts since there are overhanging trees and low  bridges. Or you could take a stroll along the towpath and join us for a pub lunch. \nDay licences for boating on the canal are available from the link below: \nBasingstoke Canal Licences

It is also possible to launch small craft onto the canal and I believe that one member is aiming to demonstrate a novel design of sailing canoe afloat at our BCC meeting this year.  There is a slipway at the BCC which is suitable for light craft but the slipway ends in a step down just at the water’s edge so it is not suitable for launching boats that need a trailer to be partially immersed for launching. \nFor these meetings most of us take lunch in the BCC on-site café. We accept donations\, say £5\, to contribute to light refreshments and room hire.

SUMMARY:Meeting in Devon
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: To suit several members in the Devon/Cornwall area\, we have moved this event back one week from the 7th June date that was previously given as a provisional date on this calendar. \nOur plan is to go sailing from Mount Batten on Saturday morning returning to Mount Batten for a pub meal on Saturday evening then the possibility of further sailing on the Sunday. \nWe plan to meet for an evening meal at the The Bridge marina restaurant\,  Shaw Way\, Mount Batten\, Plymouth PL9 9XH from 7:00pm on Saturday 14 June.  Please contact chairman@ayrs.org to be included in the table booking. \nMembers are invited to come to Mount Batten with or without a boat and sail together\, subject to weather conditions. \nMount Batten (PL9 9SJ) offers facilities to suit any craft from a SUP to a super-yacht. There is a wide concrete public slipway which is free of charge to use\, this is suitable for all sizes of road trailable boat at nearly all tide states.  Only at very low tide the concrete does not quite reach the water but launching is still possible with light craft.  Approaching Mount Batten down Lawrence Road\, the slipway is down a side road with the westernmost of the two big seaplane hangers immediately on your right and the Water-Sports Centre to your left. Free car and trailer parking is on the opposite (south) side of Lawrence Road. For larger craft there is a choice of swinging visitors’ moorings run by Cattedown Harbour Commissioners\, tel. 01752 665934\, or marina berths in the Plymouth Yacht Haven\, tel. 01752404231. The visitors moorings have orange buoys and are about 200m downstream from the sailing center. Out in the river there is also a moored pontoon for visiting craft to tie alongside but you would need to use a tender to get ashore from this pontoon.      For sailing you have a choice of sheltered water in the river Plym just off the slipway\, or Plymouth sound which is a stretch of open water about a mile and a half across\, or the wide open sea beyond the breakwater.

SUMMARY:AYRS Zoom meeting
DESCRIPTION:Subject: A presentation about the Swedish Speed Sailing Challenge by Alexander Sahlin. Picture above shows the craft sailing \n  \n \nThe principle – a paravane (hapa) to windward of the main hull pulls on a line against a slightly inclined ridged wing.  A small float to leeward of the main hull is for balance at rest. \n \nAt launch the craft can float on its side \nThe Zoom link to join this meeting is below. \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/2536740617?pwd=VFdMOGxWRDNzK1Z4NkxpTkU1a3ZUZz09&omn=87979295934 \nThe meeting ID is 253 674 0617 and the passcode is ayrs but I dont think you need those if you join through the link \nThe meeting start is at 19:30 London Time but we will open the link a bit beforehand. The meeting is scheduled to last one hour but we usually leave the connection open at the end of the meeting so that people can chat about whatever they want to\, sometimes they do chat for a long time so dont feel that you need to stay!

SUMMARY:All-day Meeting at Mytchett\, Surrey with AGM included during afternoon
DESCRIPTION:We meet at the Basingstoke Canal Centre (BCC)\, a few minutes from M3 junction 4\, postcode  GU16 6DD. We have the use of the room from 10am to 5pm but need to allow for tidying and running the vacuum cleaner over the floor at the end.  We call this an all-day meeting but feel free to come and leave as you wish\, we aim to have the kettle on for those ariving arround 10:15. \nThe meeting will include a mixture of informal discussion and prepared presentations and will also include our AGM starting at 14:30.  The AGM will be a hybrid meeting with remote members able to attend and vote using the Zoom on-line platform.   We will probably take lunch in the BCC Café prior to the AGM.  We accept donations\, say £5\, to contribute to light refreshments and room hire. \nThe link for the AGM by Zoom: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/2536740617?pwd=VFdMOGxWRDNzK1Z4NkxpTkU1a3ZUZz09&omn=83291770406 \n

SUMMARY:Boat trip on Basingstoke Canal
DESCRIPTION:Last year three of us had a trip out on the Basingstoke canal following our November meeting at the Basingstoke Canal Centre (BCC).  We launched a sliding seat rowing boat and a Hobie ‘Mirage drive’ canoe from a slipway near where the A325 crosses the canal west of Aldershot and rowed/pedaled to the town centre of Fleet and back\, having lunch at a pub in Fleet. We were lucky to enjoy bright sunshine which showed off the autumn leaves along this stretch of the canal that is mostly through woodland.  This was a pleasant day out so\, subject to weather at the time\, we propose to do something similar this year.  We may choose a different route this time\, this can be discussed at our meeting at the BCC the day before. \nThis could be suitable for canoes\, rowboats\, small motor boats\, I think also stand up paddleboards\, but not boats with masts since there are overhanging trees and low  bridges.

SUMMARY:Wednesday evening meeting during Weymouth Speedweek
DESCRIPTION:Weymouth Speedweek for 2024 is from 12 to 18 October and once again the AYRS will hold a technical discussion meeting on the Wednesday evening of the week.  Weymouth Speedweek is not an AYRS event but it is an event with which the AYRS has a long association.  Further information about Weymouth Speedweek is at Speedweek website. \nAlthough Weymouth Speedweek is now primarily an event for board sailors\, other types of sailing boat are still very welcome to attend and will compete for separate prizes to the board sailors.   Spectators are also welcome\, free of charge. Depending on weather conditions\, it is an opportunity to see some skilled sailing\, including sailing by some of the top professional board sailors. \nOur meetings on Wednesday evenings of Speedweek provide an opportunity for Speedweek competors and others to give short presentations\, in recent years we have had a pretty full program for the evening.  The meeting is attended by AYRS members\, Speedweek competitors and spectators and members of local sailing clubs. \nThis meeting will almost certainly be at the same venue as last year\, that being Weymouth Sailing Club which is at the end of the Weymouth west harbour quayside.  If we do need to change to a different venue that will be announced on this webpage.

SUMMARY:Gathering at Mount Batten in Devon
DESCRIPTION:Latest information (Friday 27 Sep) :We have a table booked at The Bridge and plan to sail on Plymouth sound during Saturday but those that I know are coming are not planning to launch boats at Mount Batten and we are not planing to sail on Sunday.  If you do wish to join us please make contact – 07484668904 . \nWe plan to hold an AYRS gathering at Mount Batten near Plymouth UK on Saturday 28 September.  Sorry this was announced at short notice – we wanted to squeeze in an event in the west country before the end of the summer. \nThe idea is to sail together on the Saturday afternoon then meet for the evening at ‘The Bridge” which is the restaurant attached to the Plymouth Yacht Haven\, a marina about 200 m south east from the Mount Batten slipway. Then if any of us are around the following day (Sunday) we can go sailing again. Come along with or without a boat\, either for the whole event or just to meet on Saturday evening. \nIf you do bring a boat it can be any size of boat within reason since Mount Batten has a good free of charge concrete slipway for road trailed boats and there are both visitors swinging moorings and visitors marina berths for larger boats. Contact Cattedown Harbour Authority to book an overnight swinging mooring or Plymouth Yacht Haven for a marina berth – an internet search will find them. I would say that I have never seen the swinging moorings fully taken up so you would probably be OK to just take one on arrival and pay by the phone number marked on the bouy. Mountbatten also has free parking for cars and boat trailers. The public car park is on the left (south) side of the road with the Mount Batten sailing center and the slipway access road on the right as you drive in from Plymstock. \nIf you are coming it would help if you could let me know if you are bringing a boat and if you would like me to include you in a table booking for 7:30 pm Saturday evening. 7:30pm. Phone number is 07484668904 or email chairman@ayrs.org. I have added details to the ‘Events’ page at ayrs.org and will use that page to notify any changes to the plan. \nWe arranged a similar AYRS event at Mount Batten in 2022 and that worked out well – not only did we have several AYRS members and guests present but also Jasper was able to promote the gathering to marine course students at Plymouth Univerity. Due to the short notice I am not expecting a big crowd this time but there are at present four of planing to come and Josephine and I intend to bring our 32foot trimaran so we can take people on the water if the weather is at all reasonable.

SUMMARY:Zoom Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Discussion of members projects and events taking place in the world of sailing.  One would expect that at this date the Ultime trimarans taking part in the ‘Arkea Challenge’ will be nearing the end of their single handed circumnavigation of the globe.   This is an exceptional event – for good or for bad this will be the first time vessels of this size have raced single handed non-stop round the world. \nThis meeting could also be an opportunity for any final planing for our stand at the RYA Dinghy and Watersports show\, let us know if you can contribute a poster or item for display on our stand. \nThe link to join this meeting is: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/2536740617?pwd=VFdMOGxWRDNzK1Z4NkxpTkU1a3ZUZz09&omn=88025153752 \nThe meeting ID is: 253 674 0617 and the passcode is: ayrs but I don’t think you will need those if you join throught the link.
